Study Description

The planning application for a proposed development of 12 luxury houses overlooking Loch Ard was reliant upon resolution of a complex vehicular and pedestrian access arrangement. The access connecting to a narrow lochside road via a steep incline and tight bend to the development site. The development required technical support to evaluate road safety risk and optimise the access strategy.

Our Approach

Recognising the challenges associated with the access we worked with the council and identified the requirement for a Road Safety Assessment as an alternative to Road Safety Audit to allow the Road Safety Specialist to provide their professional opinion on the road safety risks associated with the access strategy. We undertook site visits to assess stopping sight distances during wet weather conditions and commissioned a speed survey to assist in determining how the road is currently driven by drivers. The data was instrumental in identifying the overall ‘art of the possible’ incorporating appropriate but not typical application of relevant design guidance.

Key Successes

• Innovation in approach to promote Road Safety Assessment in lieu of Road Safety Audit.
• Consideration of wide range of guidance documents.
• Pursual of ‘art of the possible’ concept which ultimately formed the delivery solution and setting out appropriate access standards.
• Outcome focused approach sub consulting specialist support to benefit the study.
