Greenloaning to Braco Concept Path Design

Study Description

Appointed through competitive dialog, we were appointed to undertake a concept design (stage 1-2) and detailed design (stage 3) of an alternative active travel route linking the communities of Braco and Greenloaning (c.1,2km).

The project was identified through the Community Action Plan noting the limitations the existing 1m wide footway adjacent to carriageway, set within a 60mph speed limit with the downdraught of passing vehicles intimidating to younger or less experienced individuals. As the route is rural and unlit, personal safety was a key consideration with the project ambition being to support and encourage greater walking and cycling between the communities to access everyday service such as the school.

Our Approach

Whilst not technically challenging due to a number of route option possibilities, the challenges to the project presented through how the route would negotiate the only road over river bridge and road over rail bridge located between the communities. Both bridges being formed as dyke stone construction with low parapets and limited deck width. Consultation with key stakeholders was essential to benchmark constraints and identify the ‘scope of possibilities’ that could be considered within the route optioneering process.

The study is ongoing.

Key Successes

• Development of a ‘sensible’ direct and coherent route concept.
• Development of bridge solution proposing a shuttle working type traffic management system
• Liaison with key stakeholders to agree the concept strategy.
• Supporting the concept presentation to the public using our video flythrough and public consultation hub, supported by our bespoke selection of engagement tools.
